Gonubie East London Information and Accommodation
Gonubie - hidden gem of the Eastern Cape
When telling people about Gonubie, it is not uncommon to get a surprised response of 'Gonubie? Where's that?' ... and not only from people in Gauteng or the Freestate. Even people from Kei Mouth, barely 40kms drive from Gonubie towards KZN have curiously frowned by the mention of Gonubie (or in the Xhosa vernacular "Qunube", the name of a berry growing along the banks of the Gonubie river). It is thus not by accident called a hidden gem, or a closely guarded secret.
To get to Gonubie one has to turn off the N2 to between East London and Durban, and once in town there is nowhere else to go but straight into the sea! With a growing population, an outstanding primary school and a brand new high school, Gonubie even boasts a couple of robots!
Gonubie is well maintainted and suprisingly affluent for a small coastal town situated on the Gonubie River Mouth and Gonubie Bay which are often visited by passing whales and pods of dolphins. Recent development has seen a number of new townhouse complexes and a decent size shopping mall with a well-known supermarket, an up-market delicatessen along with a restaurant, a pizza take-away and a number of small boutique type shops. Part of the complex also boasts a medical centre with a day hospital.
Gonubie is a popular holiday destination and in recent years its beautiful, safe swimming beach and river and long boardwalk have attracted a number of organized holiday programs. Offering a wide selection of excellent B&B and Guesthouse establishments, easy to reach amenities and sport facilities together with the Wild Coast and several small game reserves within easy reach.
Gonubie is certainly an excellent choice for a family holiday as well as for people on business trips to East London.
We look forward to welcoming you in our town!
